In Russia, the Gulagu.net human rights project ceased operations

Its founder, Vladimir Osechkin, announced the cessation of the Gulagu.net project's work. He stated that the work of the human rights defenders had to be suspended "considering new realities and risks."

Gulagu.net was founded by Vladimir Osechkin in 2011. He and the human rights defenders who collaborated with him covered torture in Russian prisons, and Osechkin had to emigrate due to the project's work.

In 2021, Belarusian human rights defender and programmer Sergei Savelyev, who was imprisoned in the Saratov Regional Tuberculosis Hospital (ATB-1) and collaborated with Gulagu.net, published a large archive of videos showing torture and rape of prisoners there. As a result, five criminal cases were initiated regarding acts of violence in ATB-1, and a month later, Vladimir Putin dismissed the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service. Participants in the torture received sentences ranging from 12 years in a penal colony to life imprisonment.
