In occupied Crimea, due to mobile communication problems, they are returning to payphones

In Russian-occupied Crimea, street payphones have started to be installed so that residents can call emergency services during mobile network outages. The first devices appeared in Dzhankoy, where mobile communication now operates on a schedule — twice a day for four hours, writes The Moscow Times.

Payphones have been placed on several city streets. From them, one can call 112 for free, as well as call the fire service, police, ambulance, and emergency gas service. According to local authorities, these devices work even in the absence of electricity and mobile network. Another payphone was installed in Yevpatoria.

In recent weeks, many cities in Crimea have regularly been without electricity and water. Russian authorities, who control the peninsula, attribute this to strikes on substations. It is reported that it is currently impossible to establish stable schedules for electricity supply. Street lighting has also been reduced in settlements, and generators have started to be delivered to areas where outages last for a long time.

In Sevastopol, local authorities admitted that they can no longer adhere to the previous electricity supply schedule, and residents were advised to follow radio announcements and charge their mobile phones in advance at specially organized points.

Large-scale disruptions to electricity and water supply in Crimea have been ongoing since late June. After a series of strikes on infrastructure facilities on the peninsula, a state of emergency was introduced. Attacks on it continue almost daily.

In Russia, it was also previously proposed to restore the payphone network due to regular mobile communication restrictions, which Russian authorities explain as security measures.
