Famous chess player Judit Polgar could become President of Hungary
She is considered the strongest female chess player in the world.
On Sunday evening, the presidential term of Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok officially ended. He agreed to resign after the recently come to power "Tisza" party changed the country's constitution. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced his intention to propose the presidential post to Judit Polgar — a grandmaster who is considered the strongest female chess player in history, writes the BBC.
The president's powers are largely ceremonial, however, they have the right to return bills to parliament for reconsideration or send them to the Constitutional Court, whose composition was also formed during Viktor Orbán's years in power.
"Our country needs unity, peace, and a president all Hungarians can be proud of," the head of government wrote on Facebook.
He added that he would meet Polgar on Monday and ask if she agrees to become the country's president.
"Judit Polgar's name is inextricably linked with talent and dedication to her craft. As the most successful female chess player, she topped the world rankings for 26 years and was among the top ten strongest chess players in the world," Magyar noted.
Judit Polgar, who will turn 50 on July 23, is considered the strongest female chess player in history. She became the first woman to break the 2700 rating barrier. She has chess-playing sisters Zsuzsa and Sofia.
She started playing chess at the age of five, and by 15, she became a grandmaster, breaking Bobby Fischer's record.
From the very beginning of her professional career, Polgar competed in men's tournaments. In 2002, during a match between the Russian national team and the World team, she defeated Garry Kasparov, who a few years earlier had claimed that "chess is not very suitable for women" because "women are not such strong fighters."
Even earlier, in 1998, she also defeated Anatoly Karpov in one of the tournaments.
In 2014, Polgar ended her professional career and later led the Hungarian women's chess team.
