In the Russian Arctic, rescuers have suspended the search for a tourist from Belarus who disappeared during an extreme water rafting trip on January 1, writes 51.ru.
"From January 1 to 11, search and rescue operations were carried out, during which 229 km of coastline were surveyed (169 km on foot, 60 km from aboard a Russian Emergencies Ministry Mi-8 helicopter)," specified the Murmansk Region Emergencies Ministry.
The search was suspended due to the fact that the work, conducted in low-temperature conditions, was complicated by icy conditions, thick fog, and low visibility, and yielded no results. A decision was made to suspend them until search conditions improve.
The woman in question, born in 1968, was swept away by the current on the evening of January 1 in the area of the Tuloma River near Kola. Rescue units began work immediately on the day of the incident, but for the first few days, until January 5, the survey was conducted exclusively from the shore. It was not possible to use a helicopter immediately: the Emergencies Ministry explained the delay by difficult meteorological conditions unfavorable for flights.
The organizer of the icefloating event, during which the tragedy occurred, became a suspect in a criminal case.
