The incident occurred on Friday in Geographe Bay. The family was paddleboarding and kayaking when strong winds carried their inflatable vessels far from shore. The boy tried to get back on the kayak to call for help, but it began to fill with water. The teenager then decided to swim on his own and covered about 4 kilometers.
Initially, he swam in a life jacket, but after a few hours, he realized he wouldn't be able to reach the shore with it and took it off. As a result, the boy battled the waves for about four hours and managed to raise the alarm around 6 PM local time.
After this, rescuers launched a large-scale operation. Around 8:30 PM, a helicopter located the mother and two children — a 47-year-old woman, a 12-year-old boy, and an 8-year-old girl. They were clinging to a paddleboard approximately 14 kilometers from shore. A rescue vessel brought them to land.
All those affected were wearing life jackets, which helped them survive. Police and rescuers noted the teenager's exceptional bravery and determination, emphasizing that his actions saved the lives of his mother, brother, and sister. After being examined by medics, the family was taken to the hospital, and after discharge, they personally thanked the rescuers.
