According to preliminary information, the body of the former high-ranking official was found in the bathroom, and the main version of death is drowning. A criminal trace, it is stated, is not being considered.
Sergei Tropin served as Deputy Minister of Justice in 1996-1997, during Boris Yeltsin's presidency. In 1996, he was awarded the highest class rank of State Counselor of Justice.
This is not the first such incident recently. In January, the body of former Deputy Minister of Labor Alexei Sklyar was found in New Moscow. According to the official version, he committed suicide, leaving a message on social networks before his death.
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than two dozen high-ranking former and current Russian officials have died under unexplained or unusual circumstances. Experts and media note that in the first half of 2025, reports of the deaths of such individuals appeared almost monthly.
