In North Carolina, on February 14, 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee Kateryna Tovmash and her boyfriend were shot dead in a private home, writes "UP".
«A refugee who fled the war in Ukraine in search of safety in the United States was killed in a private home in North Carolina. This is the second instance in the last year where a Ukrainian refugee seeking asylum in North Carolina has been killed by a man,» — wrote on social media the victim's brother Mykhailo Tovmash.
It has been preliminarily established by the police that the suspect is the girl's ex-boyfriend — 25-year-old Caleb Haydn Fosna. He arrived in North Carolina from Ohio, having traveled for about seven hours, and then illegally broke into the house at night.
The family's younger children were there — two school-aged sisters and a six-year-old brother. According to the investigation, the man woke the children and forced the boy to lead him to his sister's room.
After that, he fired several shots in front of the child, resulting in the deaths of Kateryna Tovmash and her 28-year-old partner.
After the killing, Fosna fled, but was later apprehended.
Kateryna Tovmash was originally from Bila Tserkva. She, along with her family, moved to the USA due to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In the same state in August 2025, a homeless man stabbed 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in the subway. She sustained multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.
The murder suspect was arrested — he turned out to be 34-year-old homeless man DeCarlos Brown Jr. According to court records, Brown has a long criminal history — since 2011, he has been repeatedly arrested for theft, armed robbery, and threats.
