European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the refusal of several countries to use nuclear energy was a "strategic mistake". She said this at the summit on nuclear energy in France, where she also announced the EU's plans to allocate about 200 million euros in guarantees for private investors investing in new nuclear technologies, Bild reports.
According to her, these funds "will be allocated from the revenues of the emissions trading system."
French President Emmanuel Macron called for expanding the financing of nuclear energy and placing it on par with renewable energy sources.
“We must ensure support for new nuclear projects just as we support renewable energy,” he stated.
Macron also advocated for the accelerated development of small modular reactors and noted that the USA, Canada, and China are already actively progressing in this area.
The French leader emphasized the need for closer energy cooperation in Europe and the creation of a common emission-free electricity market.
