"Our science team helped us find some new craters that were previously unnamed. And our team would like to propose some names," said Jeremy Hansen.
The first was named Integrity — in honor of the Orion CM-003 Integrity spacecraft, on which the astronauts are flying.
The second crater, which can only be seen from Earth during certain phases of the lunar cycle, received a more personal name.
"A few years ago, as we embarked on this journey, our close-knit astronaut family lost a loved one... There's a very interesting spot on the Moon. It's a bright spot, visible only at certain moments, and we would like to name it Carol," the astronauts transmitted to Earth.
Carol was the wife of crew commander Reid Wiseman. She passed away from cancer in 2020. They are survived by two daughters, Katie and Ellie, who will now be able to see a crater on the Moon named after their mother.
