New Minister of Information answered whether YouTube will be blocked in Belarus
Today, the name of the new head of the Ministry of Information became known. After his appointment, Dzmitry Zhuk was asked if YouTube would be blocked in Belarus.
"Any decision, especially one of this kind, like a ban, must be carefully considered. Its consequences must be thought through. It must be expedient and effective. If we declare something but cannot implement it, it's better not to declare it at all," believes Dzmitry Zhuk. "Regarding platforms used by citizens of Belarus, one must act very carefully."
According to him, Lukashenka is "not a supporter of bans."
"We need to look for other mechanisms of interaction with these major players in the global media space," the new minister believes.
After BelTA, STV, and ONT channels were blocked on YouTube, propagandists began calling for the video hosting service to be blocked in the country.
Zhuk called it an information war without rules.
"It [the information war] is going on very harshly, without rules. A recent example is the removal of three channels of our leading media from YouTube. And one of the tasks is to prevent the information war from becoming hot. Let it remain in the information sphere. We will have to fight on foreign territory – on YouTube, on Instagram," said Dzmitry Zhuk.
The new minister called journalists soldiers of this information war.
"The scope of their efforts is a matter of technology, and we don't know what will be thrown at us tomorrow. But we must clearly understand that these are ideologically verified, literate people who are technologically capable of mastering any work formats. This is the most important thing that needs to be done in the information sphere," he emphasized.
Another important task, Dzmitry Zhuk named, was protecting the Belarusian market from an informational invasion of negative trends that are "against the natural morality of Belarusians."
