Belarusian Woman Flew to Maldives and Returned with a Debt of Almost 18,000 Rubles
In March 2026, a young woman went on vacation to the Maldives. According to the Belarusian woman, she disabled mobile internet on her smartphone via a widget during her vacation, but the phone still connected to the local network via her Belarusian SIM card, resulting in a debt of 17,840 rubles, writes «Onliner».

«According to the operator, apparently, my Wi-Fi disconnected somewhere in the hotel, and mobile internet connected», — the girl recounts.

According to information on the MTS operator's website, 1 MB of data via mobile internet in roaming in the Maldives costs 97.75 rubles. Thus, for a little over 180 MB, the subscriber was charged almost 18,000 rubles.
The Belarusian woman contacted the operator asking to review the debt, but the investigation dragged on because the number was originally registered to the girl's father. Meanwhile, according to the reader, the debt kept increasing during this time due to charges for unlimited calls, traffic, and forced blocking.
As a result, the girl managed to get an official response from MTS, in which the operator stated:
«Charges and debits from the personal account were made justifiably, for actually rendered services in accordance with the Agreement, roaming service tariffs, and information provided by roaming partner Ooredoo Maldives.
At the same time, adhering to MTS's adopted concept of maximum alignment with subscriber expectations, the amount charged for the reviewed data transfer services has been reduced. The refund amount is 15,988.43 rubles.».
Thus, the Belarusian woman still owed the operator 1780 rubles.
The operator also warns in the response letter:
«Connecting the equipment used to a Wi-Fi network does not block data transmission on the mobile operator's network. If both Wi-Fi and mobile data connections are simultaneously available, the phone uses the Wi-Fi connection, but if the Wi-Fi network disconnects (is lost), then data transmission occurs via mobile internet».
