On June 8, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in the southern Philippines. This is the most powerful earthquake to affect the island nation this year.

According to media reports, at least 19 people died as a result of the disaster, more than 130 were injured, and another 7 are missing.
The disaster affected Mindanao island. In its northern and central parts, dozens of buildings were damaged, including schools, hospitals, and residential buildings.
Warnings of a possible tsunami were issued in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan. Later, waves ranging from a few centimeters to one and a half meters high were recorded.
The Philippines is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters. Due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country regularly experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity.
