As president, Rahman will replace former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. She will remain in this position until September, when the official transfer of powers will take place, Bild writes.
Although the presiding position in the largest UN body (not to be confused with the head of the UN itself, António Guterres) is primarily representative in nature, the president can influence behind-the-scenes processes. The decisions of the General Assembly often have symbolic significance and are considered a reflection of global sentiments.
Rahman assumes office during a challenging period. The UN is facing pressure due to numerous unresolved armed conflicts and a funding deficit. Diplomats doubted until the last moment whether Rahman would leave his position as Bangladesh's foreign minister for this job.
However, he stated that he wants to be a "full-time president" and intends to focus on reforming UN peacekeeping missions, supporting women and girls, and addressing the problems of the world's poorest countries.
