But this is no cause for panic.
Significant changes in the choice of names for newborns have been recorded in the Homiel region: traditional names, which were very common just a couple of decades ago, have practically disappeared from statistics today. The local justice department drew attention to this fact, writes Onliner.by.
Since the beginning of this year, not a single newborn girl has been registered in the region with the names Natasha, Sveta, Ira, Halya, Lida, or Liuda. Just 20-30 years ago, these names were considered among the most popular and were found in almost every collective and family.
According to statistics, names like Tamara, Raisa, and Klavdiya have also joined the ranks of almost disappeared names. In the first four months of the year, only one girl each was registered in the Homiel region with the names Alla, Volha, Tatsiana, Nadzeya, Liubou, Nina, Zoya, and Valiantsina.
Among male names, Barys, Hienadz, and Vital are now considered "dying out" in the Homiel region — they were not chosen even once in 2026. Names like Anatol, Valery, Yury, and Vasil are also extremely rare: each of these names was registered only twice.
At the same time, some classic names are gradually returning to fashion. For example, 20 girls have received the name Viera since the beginning of the year. Among boys, the name Kastsia is becoming popular again — 18 newborns were named so.
Overall, it seems that times will soon come when the parents of Platons, Marks, and Miraslaus will look at the parents of Vitaliks with distrust and think: "Well, they're certainly showing off."
