A man made a call from Belarus via a Lithuanian operator's network. How did this happen?
He connected to a foreign operator's network without leaving Belarus.
On August 19, he was driving a car from the urban settlement of Vidzy towards the city of Pastavy. In the area of the village Zhdzyaheli, he made a call that lasted one minute, writes Onliner.by.
As soon as the call ended, a message from the Belarusian operator appeared on his smartphone screen, stating that the man had connected to the network of a Lithuanian company. A little later — a notification that he had supposedly crossed the border between Belarus and Lithuania.
According to the man, he was in Belarus the entire time, his call ended at 4:00 PM, and he received the SMS about connecting to the Bite operator at 4:03 PM. The one-minute call cost the man 13 rubles and 56 kopecks.
The Belarusian contacted the editorial office of Onliner.by with a question as to why such an incident occurred and why the operator had not created an algorithm to prohibit switching to Lithuanian networks for motorists.
Journalists contacted MTS for a comment:
— Connection to a foreign operator's network near the border is due to objective physical properties of signal propagation: radio waves are not limited by the state border, and in certain border points, a foreign network signal may become available to the device.
A smartphone constantly scans the air and selects a base station, guided by its own algorithms. In case the device connects to a foreign partner's base station, traffic is processed by its infrastructure, so such connections are charged under roaming conditions. At the same time, the subscriber receives a welcome notification, and the name of the roaming network appears on the smartphone screen.
In the described case, the user registered in the foreign network at 16:00:16, after which he initiated a voice call at 16:00:23, so the notification was successfully delivered to the device immediately after the call ended. We recommend that subscribers who frequent border areas switch their phone to manual network selection mode — this will prevent automatic registration in roaming and avoid unforeseen costs.
