Lithuania announced who will split a million euros for ideas on how to shoot down balloons from Belarus.

The Lithuanian Ministry of the Economy and Innovation has announced which companies will share a €1 million prize fund for developing the best systems to combat contraband balloons launched from Belarus. Proposed solutions include the use of lasers, drones and airships, writes LRT.

Three projects selected

The ministry announced the competition on October 27. On Monday, Minister of Economy and Innovation Edvinas Griksas announced that 35 companies participated in the competition, of which three winners were selected: "IT logika", "Teltonika EMS" and "Dangaus šviesos".

In the first stage, the selected companies will receive 100,000 euros each.

In the second stage, an additional competition will be announced for further development of the ideas.

"We hope to have a working prototype as early as February," Griksas said.

As a result of the tests, the state will select and purchase one best solution for integration into the overall system.

What solutions do the selected companies offer?

"IT logika" offers an intelligent airspace protection system based on drones and laser-optical sensors. A powerful laser will allow several balloons to be safely shot down in a single sortie. Trajectory prediction will be carried out using artificial intelligence algorithms.

"Teltonika EMS" offers an autonomous border monitoring and protection system. It will detect and identify airborne threats - balloons, drones - around the clock. The system involves the use of interceptor drones to destroy targets.

"Dangaus šviesos" offers an airship-based balloon interception system (DOBIS). The system integrates various technologies to safely land illegal balloons. A representative of the consortium noted that similar solutions are already being developed by the US Navy.
