How to timely find a tick that the eye cannot see with the help of a smartphone
July is the peak of tick activity, and many of us still rely solely on a conventional visual inspection. However, ticks, especially their nymphs (small individuals), can be so microscopic that they are easily mistaken for an ordinary mole or dirt. How to find a tick on the body with the help of a smartphone, writes the publication "RBC-Ukraine".
How the smartphone method works
Many modern smartphones are equipped with powerful cameras featuring macro photography functions or high-quality optical zoom. These technologies allow you to see what is invisible to the human eye without glasses.
How to do it correctly:
- Maximum zoom: Open the camera on your phone and enable macro mode (if available) or simply use the zoom (approximately 2x-3x). Do not zoom in too much, so the image does not become blurry.
- Using light: Ticks have a dark color and often hide in shadows. Turn on the flashlight (it's better to ask someone to shine it from the side to create shadows from the body's contours — this will help better highlight the parasite's bulge).
- Capturing frames: Take a photo of the suspicious skin area. On the large screen of your phone, you will be able to examine the image in detail, zoom in, and see characteristic legs or a specific shape that are not noticeable during a normal inspection.
This method is ideal for checking hard-to-reach areas (for example, under the armpits, behind the ears, knee bend), where it is difficult to look even with a mirror.
Why is this important right now?
Tick nymphs at the maturation stage are the size of a poppy seed. They are most often carriers of dangerous infections, as they are almost impossible to feel on the skin.
Using a smartphone camera allows you to "look" into the skin pores and timely notice an "uninvited guest" before it has managed to burrow deep.
Important precautions
While this life hack significantly simplifies inspection, it is important to remember safety rules:
A smartphone is an auxiliary tool. Always conduct a thorough physical examination of your skin after every walk in the park or forest.
If you find a tick, do not try to remove it with your fingers or squeeze it. Use a special tick twister (lasso) or tweezers.
If you find a tick, the main thing is to remove it as soon as possible to minimize the risk of infection. If the area around the bite starts to redden (especially in the form of a ring), immediately consult an infectious disease specialist.
