"Today it's already warmer in the apartment, +5". How Kyiv is again without heating after the Russian attack

Kyiv faced the most severe consequences of a new Russian attack on Tuesday night, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported. According to him, about six thousand apartment buildings were left without heat. Heating had only recently been restored to some of the affected homes after the previous attack.

Daria's apartment had no heating for about a week. This interview was recorded on Monday, January 19. An hour before the film crew arrived, half of the radiators in her house started working: "Today it's already warmer here, today it's already plus five. Yesterday it was two degrees here." But on Tuesday, the lights and heating disappeared again, "Current Time" reports.

Both the Ukrainian president and Ukrainian intelligence had warned of another shelling. After the first explosions, Kyiv residents descended into basements and the metro.

"We go down when many aircraft and missiles are planned. Then we go down. Because we survived a missile strike near our house. So we are anxious," people say in a shelter at the station. "We don't go down very often, but today we are scared. Because ballistic missiles exploded, and not just once."

Overnight, Russia launched a Zircon missile, 18 ballistic and 15 cruise missiles at Ukraine. The Ukrainian air defense shot down most of them. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that what is happening is proof of Russia's disregard for peace initiatives. He added that the consequences of the night attack could have been much worse, but Ukrainian air defense had something to defend with.

The main strike in Kyiv again hit the thermal power plant. In the morning, the mayor of the capital reported: 5.5 thousand multi-story buildings were left without heat, almost 80% of them are homes where heating was so difficult to restore over the past week.

To carry out repair work, electricians have to break through frozen ground: "This is a real winter. It is very difficult to break through the soil, through everything – much more difficult. But our task is to do the work and give people light."

In high-rise buildings, pumps shut down along with the lights.

"We launched the pumps on a permanent basis. Because when the power goes out, the pumps turn off and don't pump. Two stairwells 'pushed through'. The third one doesn't push through, we already have frozen risers. We drained the system, now we are connecting experts," says Mykola Vyatrovych, head of the managing company of one of the buildings.

The CEO of the energy company "Yasna" wrote that half of the capital's housing stock was left without heat. On the left bank of Kyiv, light and water also disappeared. Daria was again left without heating. She studies and applies survival hacks in a cold apartment. The most popular and budget-friendly one in Kyiv now is fire-resistant brick, which she heats in the oven of a gas stove.

"They heat up like this, and then they give off heat. You can put pads there, you can put dog shoes there so they dry," Daria shows.

At home, she has to walk and sleep in warm clothes: "Army thermal underwear, two pairs of trekking socks, a blanket. Carpathian blankets, warm tea. The dog moved under my blanket because she is warm."
