Doctors in Paris Sentenced Over Billionaire's Death During Penis Enlargement Surgery

A French court has issued a verdict in a high-profile case that shocked the world of high finance seven years ago. Belgian billionaire Ehud Arye Laniado, one of the world's leading diamond experts, died on the operating table during an attempt to enlarge his penis. As it turned out during the hearings, the "diamond king" was operated on by people who did not even have the proper work documents.

The tragedy occurred at a private clinic in the center of Paris back in 2019. The cause of death for the 65-year-old businessman was a heart attack, which began after an injection into his genitals. The court qualified what happened as involuntary manslaughter, emphasizing a whole chain of fatal errors by the medical staff, writes BILD.

The investigation revealed that the surgeon who directly performed the procedure worked without a license in France, and the clinic director did not have the necessary medical certificates at all.

When the patient's condition worsened, the doctors reacted criminally slowly: emergency services were called with a significant delay, and resuscitation efforts began when it was already almost impossible to save the billionaire.

Laniado possessed astronomical wealth. He headed the company Omega Diamonds and was considered an undisputed authority in the valuation of precious stones. It was he who, in 2015, sold the rare "Blue Moon of Josephine" diamond at auction for a record $48.4 million. He owned the most expensive penthouse in Monaco, valued at around 35 million euros, but even such money could not calm his inner demons.

As friends of the deceased recalled, the billionaire suffered from deep complexes his entire life due to his short stature. The only time he stopped thinking about it was when his accountant, at his request, would read out the status of his bank accounts — a ritual repeated many times a day. The desire to "fix" himself with the help of medicine ultimately led him to the table of incompetent specialists.

The verdict of the Parisian court was as follows: the clinic director received a 15-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 50,000 euros, while the surgeon received a 12-month suspended sentence and a fine of 20,000 euros. However, the most painful consequence for them was a lifelong ban from any medical activity.

Laniado himself was buried in his homeland, Israel. Interestingly, at the time of his death, the businessman was facing another trial in Belgium, where he was suspected of large-scale tax fraud, but his death during a cosmetic procedure closed that case forever.
