A court has sentenced Kouri Richins, a Utah-based author of a children's book about overcoming grief, to life in prison without parole for the murder of her husband – the father of her children. Statements from her sons, who say they fear their mother, were read in court. Richins maintains her innocence and plans to appeal the court's decision, writes BBC.
Announcing the verdict, Judge Richard Mrazik said Richins was "too dangerous to ever be free." The sentencing fell on her husband Eric's birthday — he would have turned 44 on Wednesday, May 13.
What Family Members Said in Court
The woman's father-in-law, Eugene Richins, spoke in court. He asked the judge to sentence her to life in prison to protect her children, reports the Associated Press. "This sentence is critical to ensure Eric's three sons never have to live in fear that the person responsible for their father's death could also harm them," he said.
The Richins children were 9, 7, and 5 years old at the time of Eric's death. They are now under the guardianship of his sister, Katie Richins-Benson. She stated that the boys are "not props for some children's book about grief and loss, but that is exactly the role Kouri reduced their lives to."
Social workers read letters from Richins' sons in court. "You took Dad from me purely out of greed, and you didn't care about anyone but yourself and your stupid boyfriends," wrote her middle son (now 11 years old). The boy had to take care of his younger brother because his mother neglected them.
The eldest son (now 13 years old) also recounted having to care for his brothers. According to him, his mother often locked him in his room when she was drinking alcohol.
Richins, who refused to testify during the trial, delivered a 30-minute statement addressed to her sons before the sentencing.
"No matter how much you are made to think that your dad was murdered, that I took him from you, it's absolutely not true. It's a complete lie," CNN quotes Richins as saying.
"I know you don't want to talk to me today and you hate me. That's okay. When you're ready, I'll be here," she said.
The defense requested a lighter sentence for Richins, arguing that her children might want a relationship with their mother in the future. Kouri Richins' relatives also asked for a less severe punishment: some of them, such as her brother Ronnie Darden, insisted on her innocence.
Richins' lawyers intend to appeal the verdict.
According to the investigation, 36-year-old real estate agent Kouri Richins was millions of dollars in debt and planning a life with another man. She took out several life insurance policies on her husband (he was unaware of this) and mistakenly believed she would inherit over $4 million after his death.
Eric Richins died on March 4, 2022, after drinking a cocktail prepared by his wife. The cause of death was fentanyl overdose. A year later, Kouri Richins released the children's book "Are You With Me?" about a boy whose father died, and on May 8, 2023, police arrested her on suspicion of murdering her husband.
Richins refused to testify in court, and her defense did not call any witnesses. The woman's lawyers stated that they were convinced the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence. Richins' defense insisted that her husband was addicted to painkillers, but when Eric died, she told police he was not known to use drugs.
In March 2026, a jury found Kouri Richins guilty on all counts: murder, attempted murder (she tried to poison her husband on February 14, 2022, but he survived), and fraud. She awaits a separate trial on other financial charges.
