Dutch Prime Minister wittily joked at a meeting with Tsikhanouskaya
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rob Jetten, for the first time in The Hague.
They discussed support for Belarusian civil society and human rights defenders through Dutch programs, the possible accession of the Netherlands to the International Humanitarian Fund to assist Belarusian political prisoners, former political prisoners, and their families, as well as the international accountability of Lukashenka's regime.
“During first meetings with new politicians, it’s always important to, as they say, break the ice. And here it happened in a very unexpected, even in a certain sense, a 'meme-like' way,” shared Dzianis Kuchynski, Tsikhanouskaya’s advisor, with Nasha Niva. —
The Prime Minister started the conversation by saying that he is among the top 5 youngest world leaders (he became prime minister at 38. — NN). And he said that in this top five, there is one undemocratic leader from Burkina Faso, so if a 'club of young leaders' were to be created, it would be much better to include Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya (she was 37 at the time of the 2020 elections. — NN).
“We replied that we had indeed seen this statistic about young leaders. But on Belarusian Twitter, when these figures were compared, another one emerged — 31,” says Kuchynski, referring to another image where dictators who have been in power the longest are gathered, and among them is Lukashenka.
“We said that this number must be stopped as soon as possible.”
Following the meeting, Dzianis Kuchynski plans to call the director for national security and foreign policy in the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands next week.
