15 corpses and a broken wing. Near Minsk, an entire colony of grey herons was thoughtlessly destroyed

The incident occurred on May 24 near the village of Kaikava, Mikhanavichy village council. A colony of birds had existed in this location for a long time. However, during the clearing of deadwood along the road, trees containing nests were destroyed. The work was carried out without considering that birds nest during this period, writes pristalica.by.

According to local residents, after the felling, 15 dead birds remained on the ground. Adult herons circled the site where their nests once were for several more days, searching for their chicks.

One chick managed to survive but sustained a broken wing — volunteers are now trying to save it.

Specialists from the Minsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, along with an inspection team, visited the site. They confirmed the fact of the felling and found an eyewitness to the incident. During the inspection, they also discovered the place where the bodies of the deceased birds had been buried. After excavation, their mass death was confirmed.

According to Belarusian legislation, felling trees is prohibited from February 16 to August 14, as this is the bird nesting period. The destruction of nests during this time is considered a serious violation and entails administrative responsibility.

An investigation is currently underway to determine who exactly carried out the work and destroyed the nests. Those responsible face a fine.
