A dead whale has been found off the Danish island of Anholt, which, according to the Danish environmental agency, "with high probability" could be Timmy — the humpback whale whose fate had been followed for several weeks in the Baltic Sea, writes Bild.
The animal was found approximately 200 kilometers from where it was released towards the North Sea on May 2.
According to Ekstra Bladet, the whale near Anholt has likely been dead for some time. The initiative group that was involved with Timmy does not yet know if it is indeed him.
Today, during low tide, authorities plan to take a tissue sample from the animal to confirm its identity.
Morten Abildstrøm, an employee of the Danish agency, said that it could be a humpback whale 10-15 meters long that washed ashore. The initial photographs show that the animal's skin is severely damaged.
Authorities have urged people not to approach the carcass: the whale could be a carrier of infection, and additionally, due to gas accumulation, the body of a dead marine mammal could explode.
