Estonian Foreign Minister: Putin wants us to stop Ukraine from drone attacks, but we should continue
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna advocated for the continuation of Ukrainian drone strikes on targets in Russia. He stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
Tsahkna emphasized that Estonia, of course, is not happy that Ukrainian drones are flying into its territory. But, he noted, Russia is responsible for these incidents.
— We are certainly not happy that these drones are on our territory, but the responsibility lies with Russia, as it can stop the war tomorrow. We can see more and more such incidents. These are the side effects of Russia's aggressive war.
According to him, Russia is now deliberately "pushing" these drones into NATO territory, while spreading a false narrative that NATO — the Baltic states and Finland — officially allows Ukraine to use their territory for these attacks.
— That's not true. We have never allowed it, — he says.
He argues that the world must understand that the responsibility lies with Russia.
— Of course, Putin wants us all to pressure Ukraine to stop these attacks, but we are not doing that. This must be absolutely clear, and we made it clear at the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting last week: this is not Ukraine's fault, it is Russia's fault.
Putin always plays on this fear of escalation. He wants to show that the Baltic states and this part of NATO will be drawn into the war. Historically, we understand this fear of escalation from the West, but I think we cannot be afraid.
I can tell you that no one doubts Ukraine's right to attack targets deep in the rear of Russia. I think that "Ukraine's long-term sanctions," as my Ukrainian colleague, Minister Sybiha, calls them, are working well, — he adds.
The diplomat says that Ukraine only needs to be more careful.
— When you hit the "lifelines" of the Russian war machine in Ust-Luga, St. Petersburg, and other cities, it is very close to our borders, — says Tsahkna.
But stopping is not an option, he believes.
— Putin is deeply concerned because almost 60 percent of gas and oil exports go through these ports. Therefore, Ukraine must continue.
