11 people were killed and 30 injured in a powerful explosion in the Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan, Reuters reports .
The injured were taken to hospitals where they are receiving medical assistance. The cause of the explosion and other details of the incident have not yet been reported.
The Islamist group "Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan," also known as the "Pakistani Taliban," claimed responsibility for the attack.
Dera Ismail Khan is located in northwestern Pakistan, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, approximately 350 kilometers southwest of Islamabad. Several explosions have occurred in this city in recent years.
In January 2026, a suicide bomber detonated himself at a wedding at the home of local peace committee head Noor Alam Mahsud. At least seven people were killed and 25 injured then. Shortly before that, three police officers were killed when a police car was blown up in the city. In November 2023, a bomb planted on a motorcycle exploded near a police patrol at a bus stop, killing five people.
The current explosion occurred amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. On September 23, Pakistani authorities stated that air defense shot down eight drones that flew into the country from Afghan territory.
The next day, Pakistan's Information Minister Ataullah Tarar announced strikes on ten targets in Afghanistan. According to him, drones were launched and stored at these facilities. Tarar blamed the Taliban government for the escalation and stated that Islamabad would provide an "immediate and decisive response" to any violation of Pakistan's sovereignty. At the same time, the minister emphasized that Pakistan does not seek further escalation.
