David Hockney's Dachshund Portrait Put Up for Auction for $3.3 Million
The painting depicts Hockney's first dachshund, named Stanley, peacefully sleeping on a cushion.
A portrait of a dog, painted by British artist David Hockney, who passed away in June at the age of 88, has been put up for auction with an estimated price of £1.5—2.5 million (from $2 to $3.3 million), reports The Guardian.
The painting 'Dog Painting 17' will be the first work from Hockney's series featuring dogs to be put up for auction. In total, the artist created over 40 such works.
The painting depicts Hockney's first dachshund, named Stanley, sleeping on a cushion. The artist chose him as a puppy in 1987 and named him after actor Stan Laurel. Later, Hockney acquired a second dachshund named Boogie.
The auction will take place on October 14.
In November 2018, David Hockney's painting 'Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)' was sold at Christie's auction in New York for $90.3 million. At the time, it was a record for paintings, and Hockney became the most expensive living artist.
