Russia Began Installing Anti-Drone "Mangals" on Black Sea Fleet Submarines
Ukrainian drone attacks are becoming increasingly effective, and Russian armed forces have to defend equipment not only at the front line and in occupied territories. According to British military intelligence, anti-drone grates have started to cover submarines at the naval base in Novorossiysk, writes The Moscow Times.
Ukraine, with its uncrewed naval vessels, has effectively expelled Russia's Black Sea Fleet from Crimea. Its base has now become Novorossiysk, where, according to an analysis of satellite images conducted by the UK Ministry of Defence, the conning towers of three submarines are now covered with anti-drone nets. The images were taken between June 6 and 9.
One of the images from June 9, posted by the UK Ministry of Defence on July 2, shows two submarines with nets. In a comment from the department's intelligence officers, it is stated that "almost certainly" a fourth submarine at the base will soon receive similar protection. Such nets are called "mangals" in the Russian army; they are installed to protect against drones hunting for military equipment located behind the front line.
The Kilo-class submarines (according to NATO classification) that the British are writing about are Project 877 'Paltus' diesel-electric submarines and the improved Project 636 'Varshavyanka' version. They are among the quietest non-nuclear submarines in the world, have 6 torpedo tubes, are capable of launching Kalibr-PL cruise missiles, carrying mine armaments, and portable anti-aircraft missile systems.
The UK Ministry of Defence's comment clarifies:
"These actions are almost certainly being taken as a precautionary measure in response to Ukraine's increasing ability to strike targets located at a distance from the front line using UAVs."
Ukraine had previously also attacked the Novorossiysk base, mainly using naval drones. To counter them, sailors installed barriers in the water. The "mangals", designed to protect against aerial threats, indicate that the Black Sea Fleet now also fears UAV attacks.
After the Armed Forces of Ukraine blew up the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya during an aerial attack, a 'Pantsir' anti-aircraft missile system, clearly removed from the front, appeared near it. It was also protected by a "mangal".
