On Sunday, July 12, two climbers died on Matterhorn mountain — 32-year-old Israeli Alam Fares and his climbing partner, a citizen of Belarus. This was reported by Swiss media and the Ynet publication, which interviewed relatives of the deceased Israeli.
According to the Swiss public prosecutor's office of Canton Valais, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. at an altitude of approximately 4030 meters during the descent from the summit.
Alam Fares' uncle said that his nephew went to Switzerland on Wednesday with his partner from Belarus. After reaching the summit, Alam reported that everything was fine and began the descent. A few hours later, contact with him was lost. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two people fall as a result of a rockfall.
The rescue operation, involving helicopters, lasted about four hours. After two hours of searching, two bodies matching the description of the climbers were found.
According to the family, a passport was found on the body of the Belarusian climber, which allowed his citizenship to be identified, but his name has not yet been publicly disclosed.
