Lithuanian Foreign Ministry wants to introduce new restrictions for Russians and Belarusians

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) wants to introduce new restrictions for citizens of Russia and Belarus — this involves a ban on purchasing real estate near strategic objects and not allowing cultural, educational, and sports figures who support the war against Ukraine into Lithuania, writes LRT.

The MFA proposes not to allow physical and legal entities from Russia and Belarus, as well as representatives of organizations wishing to conduct public activities in the fields of education, science, culture, sports, art, and entertainment, into Lithuania if it turns out that they are conducting or have conducted such activities in annexed or temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine by Russia, or if they directly or indirectly support or participated in the war against Ukraine.

It is also proposed not to allow those who take actions or pursue policies that harm the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine, harm its stability or security, as well as those who directly or indirectly support gross human rights violations or repression against civil society and democratic forces in Russia or Belarus, or whose activities pose a threat to democracy or the rule of law.

The MFA proposes that those wishing to come to Lithuania for concerts be obliged to sign a declaration condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine and recognizing Ukraine's territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders.

The MFA also proposes to restrict the ability of Russians and Belarusians with temporary residence permits (TRP) to purchase real estate in Lithuania near strategically important objects.

The MFA proposes that such amendments take effect from January 1 of next year.

Previously, similar proposals — both regarding citizens of Russia and Belarus who want to perform in Lithuania with concerts, and regarding the ban on purchasing real estate near objects important for national security — were put forward by conservatives. Their amendments were not adopted, as the exclusive right to initiate national sanctions is granted to the government.
