FIFA wants to increase the number of national teams at the World Cup to 64
FIFA is considering increasing the number of participants in the FIFA World Cup from the current 48 to 64 national teams. The changes could be introduced as early as the 2030 tournament.
According to a document reviewed by Reuters, FIFA plans to involve an independent organization to assess how increasing the number of teams will affect the competition format, its organization, and other important aspects of hosting the World Cup.
The question of a possible expansion is already being discussed within FIFA. American TV channel ESPN also reported that the organization is considering various options for the further development of the global championship.
Since 2026, 48 national teams participate in the final stage of the World Cup. If the new proposal is approved, their number could increase to 64 at the 2030 tournament.
The 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. FIFA plans to make a final decision on the possible expansion of the tournament after conducting research and relevant consultations.
