Officials reacted to the shocking story about childbirth in Minsk — they found no violations
Hundreds of thousands of views were garnered by the story of a Belarusian woman who complained about violations during childbirth in Minsk Maternity Hospital No. 5. Now, the commission that was supposed to investigate the case has sent the woman a reply — according to it, there are no culprits.
A Belarusian woman under the nickname annasooliate published her story on August 28. Hanna said that on April 18, she gave birth to a child in Minsk Maternity Hospital No. 5, and shared the difficulties during childbirth.
According to her, doctors mistakenly underestimated the baby's weight, which led to the woman being denied a C-section, denied full anesthesia, and pressured her to give consent for a medical procedure — amniotomy (rupturing of the fetal bladder). The woman gave birth naturally, but the labor was complicated. After discharge, Hanna was found to have a urinary tract infection and problems with her stitches.
The Healthcare Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee created a commission to investigate Hanna's story. The woman has now received a reply.
According to that reply, Hanna was hospitalized in the maternity ward when she was 12 days overdue. However, Hanna herself claims that there was no overdue pregnancy, and the doctors in the maternity ward simply arbitrarily changed her pregnancy term. Due to being overdue, the reply states, labor had to be induced, otherwise there could have been complications.
Regarding the amniotomy, the reply reminds that Hanna gave written consent for the procedure. But they do not mention pressure, instead writing about "the doctor's explanation of possible risks upon refusal." According to the text of the reply, Hanna showed no signs of an inflammatory process upon discharge. In her comment, the woman points out that she had a poor blood test with high leukocyte and bacterial counts upon discharge, and later, in a private center, she was prescribed an emergency course of antibiotics because an inflammatory infiltrate was found in Hanna.
As a result, the reply states, the woman was treated in the maternity hospital according to the clinical protocol. Officials also found no facts of violation of medical ethics towards Hanna, partly due to the fact that video recordings in the maternity hospital are stored for only 30 days.
Hanna herself is not ready to accept such a reply. The woman plans to appeal it, and then turn to the prosecutor's office.
