"We would have lived without war for a year already." Lavrov accused the US and Europe of prolonging the war in Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the war in Ukraine could have ended a year ago if the US had not withdrawn from the agreements allegedly reached by Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at a meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.

"If the Americans had not withdrawn from the Anchorage agreements, if Europe had not pulled them away from these agreements, we would have been living without war for a year already. This is an obvious fact," Lavrov said during a round table on Ukraine.
According to him, Moscow is ready to seek "reasonable compromises" to resolve the conflict. At the same time, Russia, as Lavrov stated, has not changed its main demands. Among them, he named guaranteeing Russia's security, preventing NATO's presence near Russian borders, and ensuring, as he put it, the legitimate rights of Russian and Russian-speaking people who have lived in these territories for centuries, and their "liberation from the threats of Nazification."
Lavrov also stated that Russia allegedly never refused negotiations with Ukraine and is ready for a new round of talks. "We have something to say," he emphasized.
Earlier, Lavrov said that Russian authorities hoped to reach an agreement with Trump on Ukraine "like boys." According to his version, it was for this purpose that Putin went to meet the American president in Anchorage in August 2025.
Lavrov claimed that during the negotiations, the Russian side "fully" accepted the US proposal to end the war in Ukraine. However, after that, according to him, EU representatives and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "hindered Trump" and "buried" the agreements reached.
As a result, the US position changed, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for seeking "new approaches." At the same time, Lavrov admitted that after meeting with Putin, Trump called the issue of transferring the entire territory of Donbas under Russia's control difficult. This is precisely what Moscow continues to demand.
In early September, Lavrov also stated that Russia would continue the war against Ukraine until the West makes concessions to Moscow. According to him, Western countries had many opportunities to achieve peace in Ukraine, but they allegedly repeatedly prevented Kyiv from concluding an appropriate agreement. Therefore, Lavrov claimed, the West should not "fuss" with its "new ideas" regarding Ukraine.
