Vasil Kalach calls himself not just a tour guide — he embodies a character from a certain era. And he tells about historical events from that character's perspective.
A Belarusian actor, director, fencer, and popularizer of history now conducts tours in Bialystok. He showed the Most "Belarusians Can" project how this happens and how the city's residents perceive such a format.
Vasil is from Hrodna. However, he could not legally conduct tours in his homeland: he hadn't passed the tour guide exam.
— And I would never have defended it in my life with my topics. Because ideology and censorship would have cut all this off at the stage of the submitted paper, — he explains. And he adds that some tours took place at the end of 2020 and in 2021, and then there was always a risk that he would be arrested.
Forced to leave his homeland and arriving in Bialystok, Vasil began to take an interest in the city's history. Now he tells groups not only about the actions of kings or other historical figures, but also about the way of life and relationships of the city's residents.
Vasil conducts tours in Belarusian and Polish. He has no language barrier.
In Hrodna, Polish was always heard, and he often traveled to that country. Vasil says that Bialystok has always been a multicultural city, so the Eastern accent he has, "no matter how much you try to get rid of it," even adds flavor. Tour participants even asked the Belarusian how he managed to acquire such a beautiful accent.
Now the actor dreams of opening a historical fencing school in Bialystok.
