Last summer, Artsiom Makey studied for two weeks at Long Island University (USA). But, as his mother Viera Paliakova-Makey says, he returned and said that he didn't need New York. And he found his alma mater in Minsk.
This year, the younger son of the late Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makey and director of the Youth Theatre Viera Paliakova-Makey graduated from the Minsk International Gymnasium of Iryna Abelskaya — one of the few private educational institutions allowed to continue operating.
The happy mother posted a photo on Instagram with Artsiom, adorned with a "Graduate" ribbon, and captioned it: "My little basket-son."
On this occasion, Viera Paliakova danced in a parents' flashmob: "We lit it up a bit at our son's last bell. Yes, I'm a mother and I can dance!" But she did not disclose the boy's future plans on Instagram.
It should be noted that Makey's son was previously interested in creativity. At 9 years old, Artsiom sang at his mother's creative evening. And at 10, as part of the group "Niasumny Uzrost" (Not Sad Age), with the Belarusian-language song "Faina" (Cool), he tried to get into Junior Eurovision.
The group couldn't even reach the final of the national selection — Viera Paliakova-Makey then accused the jury of bias. But the story did not continue.
At a meeting with her fans, the actress said that Artsiom's interest in creativity suddenly disappeared around the age of 15.
"He said: 'No, I don't want to, I'll go into international economics.' Then he struggled with mathematics for two years. Last summer he was abroad for a month and a half, even flew to New York. He studied at Long Island University for two weeks," Viera confessed.
She added that she paid for this trip together with her elder son Dzmitry (who graduated from medical university) — and for both of them, it was quite a difficult financial task.
"We were very financially strained. We, indeed, then collectively tightened our belts for three months, nevertheless, we managed. Dzima and I are proud that we managed to send Artsiom there to study. And he returned, saying: 'No. I want to be like dad, in international relations.'"
It seems the boy ultimately chose this path. Artsiom Uladzimiravich Makey can be seen on the list of people who entered BSU this year. However, his name did not appear there immediately. It is entirely possible that Artsiom Makey only got into the paid department.
"Nasha Niva" found the boy in a video dedicated to Freshmen Day at the Faculty of International Relations.
Recall that the 64-year-old Uladzimir Makey belonged to the liberal wing of Lukashenka's loyalists and was one of the few in the top echelons who occasionally spoke Belarusian. In Soviet times, Makey was an officer of the Soviet GRU; in independent Belarus, he began a diplomatic career. Makey came to the position of head of the Presidential Administration and later Minister of Foreign Affairs through the office of Aleksandr Lukashenka's personal assistant, which he took in 2000 — this was after the disappearances of Viktar Hanchar and Jury Zakharanka, at a turning point in the character of the Belarusian regime.
In February 2023, Uladzimir Makey committed suicide.
Uladzimir had two sons — the younger Artsiom and the elder Vital (from his first marriage).
In 2020, Vital Makey resigned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was perceived by observers as a silent protest against election fraud and violence. In 2021, he criticized his father's department for rudeness and loss of moral compass. Currently, Vital's LinkedIn profile states that he lives in Poland and is the head of sales for "Kit" studio.
