The USA has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, which will take place on December 14-15 in Miami. This was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to him, the summit could be an opportunity for Putin to converse not only with US President Donald Trump, but also with other world leaders.
Putin has not attended G20 summits since 2019. Earlier, Trump expressed doubt that the Russian president would come to Miami, but allowed for the possibility of another personal meeting with him. Rubio stated that such a meeting has not yet been discussed.
Putin and Trump last met at a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025. The main topic of that meeting was the cessation of the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Kremlin, cited by Bloomberg agency, claimed that Putin is likely to skip the G20 summit in the USA. According to them, he plans instead to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China, which will be held on November 18-19 under the chairmanship of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Bloomberg noted that Putin seeks to avoid multilateral international forums where he would have to meet with Ukraine's European allies, as well as the leaders of Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. In addition, the Kremlin fears the possible presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G20 summit. Earlier, Zelenskyy proposed to Putin a bilateral meeting during the summit dedicated to ending the war.
In early autumn, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported that Putin and Xi Jinping had discussed the possibility of a trilateral meeting with Trump during the APEC summit. However, its occurrence would depend on whether the American president travels to China.
On September 23, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin is ready for a new personal meeting with Trump. At the same time, he admitted that there are no concrete agreements regarding such a meeting yet. Trump himself said in early September that he was ready to meet with Putin again, but would prefer it to happen after an agreement on Ukraine is reached.
