Hungary promised to abandon Russian gas in a year along with the entire EU
Having lost its friend in Budapest in the person of Viktor Orban, Moscow will soon lose the remaining gas that it still continues to supply to EU countries.
Hungary has enough pipeline connections to purchase it from other sources at competitive prices, so it is capable of fulfilling the EU's requirements to completely stop importing Russian gas in a year, said István Kapitány, Minister of Energy of the new government, writes Moscow Times.
If the situation develops as it appears now, gas supplies to Hungary can and will be ensured from other sources by October 2027, Kapitány said in an interview with local media outlet Telex.
The EU previously approved a plan to gradually phase out purchases from Russia. The final stage, which involves stopping LNG imports under long-term contracts, is expected to conclude in a year.
