Estonia is ready to completely close its border with Russia if mobilization is announced there
Estonia is preparing for the possibility of a new mobilization being announced in Russia and, if necessary, may completely close its land border with Russia. This was stated by Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, reports ERR.
According to Kristen Michal, decisions will be made depending on the assessment of the threat level. He noted that border crossing points can be closed very quickly, as has already happened in situations when disturbances occurred at the border. The Police and Border Guard Board, as well as the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs, are ready for such a step.
Margus Tsahkna stated that Estonia does not consider it necessary to grant international protection to Russians who may flee to Europe from mobilization. According to him, last year Schengen countries issued about 650,000 visas to Russian citizens, and in the event of new mobilization, migration pressure may increase.
At the same time, Tsahkna noted that Estonia has already restricted entry for such citizens. He also stated that European partners need to take into account the possible increase in internal tension in Russia and its impact on European security.
The minister emphasized that, in Estonia's opinion, fleeing Russia to Europe in case of mobilization should not automatically give a person grounds for receiving international protection.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that even some Kremlin officials and military enlistment office employees fear the possibility of a new wave of mobilization in Russia.
