Disney is preparing a relaunch of the popular early 1990s animated series 'Darkwing Duck'. The new version will be released on the Disney+ streaming service approximately 35 years after the original's premiere. The creators aim to retain familiar characters and the atmosphere of the classic animated series, but tell a completely new story.
According to the plot, Drake Mallard spent many years in a parallel world where no one knows about his past, his exploits, and his fight against criminals. Upon returning to his familiar world, he is forced to essentially reacquaint himself with his own legend. He is helped by the young and mischievous Duckie, who is well-versed in the history of his adventures and becomes his sidekick.
The heroes will once again have to face villains familiar to fans of the original series, including Megavolt, Negaduck, and others.
Drake Mallard in the new version will be voiced by Mark Hamill, known for his role as Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars'. Seth Rogen will be the voice of Launchpad McQuack and also an executive producer for the project. Gosalyn Mallard will be voiced by Lizzy Caplan, and Duckie by Lilimar. Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, and other actors also participate in the voice cast.
Ted Stone, creator of the original 'Darkwing Duck', has joined the project. He will serve as a consultant for the new version, which should help maintain a connection with the classic animated series.
Production is handled by Disney Television Animation with the participation of Point Grey Pictures, a company associated with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The new animated series will not be a direct continuation of the original series or the 'DuckTales' reboot from 2017 — it will be a separate story.
The original 'Darkwing Duck' aired in 1991-1992 and consisted of 91 episodes. The character later reappeared in the 'DuckTales' reboot. Now, new adventures in a modern format are being prepared for Drake Mallard for the Disney+ audience.
