Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he considers Ukraine's quick accession to the European Union impossible, writes "European Pravda".
After consultations between SPD and CDU/CSU leaders at the Chancellery in Berlin, the Chancellor commented on the date by which, as high-ranking Ukrainian officials insist, Ukraine should become an EU member, calling it "impossible".
"Accession by January 1, 2027, is ruled out. It's impossible," Merz said.
He explained that every country wishing to join the EU must meet the Copenhagen criteria. And this process, as a rule, takes several years. At the same time, Merz stressed that it is important for Ukraine to have a perspective that paves the way for accession, but this is a long-term process.
"We can gradually bring Ukraine closer to the European Union. This is always possible, but such a quick accession is simply impractical," the Chancellor explained.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called Ukraine's EU perspective a decisive contribution to ensuring a future peaceful settlement and to the security architecture in Europe.
At the same time, Wadephul made it clear that there can be no prospects for shortcuts for Kyiv in the accession process.
On January 25, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the document on security guarantees with European allies should enshrine the date of Ukraine's accession to the EU — 2027.
