Trump claimed Putin "kept his promise" not to shell Ukrainian cities for a week
Washington and Kyiv differently assess the results of the energy moratorium, which Donald Trump asked Vladimir Putin for last week. The American president states that the Kremlin fulfilled its promise not to strike cities during the frosts, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy notes that Russia only used this pause to accumulate missiles and prepare for an even larger strike.
"He agreed, he kept his word," US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House about Putin, writes the BBC. According to him, Russia, as promised, did not shell Ukrainian cities until February 1.
The energy moratorium became known on January 29 — at that time, Trump said that he personally asked Vladimir Putin not to launch strikes on Ukraine for a week during the frosts, and Putin agreed.
The Kremlin later announced that Russia was suspending strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities until February 1 "with the aim of creating favorable conditions for negotiations."
Less than a week passed from the moment the cessation of strikes became known until the start of new Russian strikes, as stated by President Zelenskyy. "Incomplete four days have passed from the week Russia was asked for. This indicates everything else that Russia promises or may yet promise. If their word is not kept now, what can we expect next?" said the Ukrainian president.
Earlier, President Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv expects a reaction from the US to Russia's massive missile attack on Ukraine. "There was a personal request from the President of the United States. We see that Russia responded to this request with a record number of ballistic missiles," Zelenskyy said in an evening address on February 3.
