On social networks and forums, frightening stories regularly appear about "giant rats" that supposedly inhabit the tunnels of the Minsk metro. According to the authors of such stories, the size of the rodents is comparable to that of a dog. In the metro, however, they assure : this is nothing more than an urban legend.

In fact, the appearance of giant rats in the metro is impossible. Underground metro structures are an environment with limited access to food. In such conditions, large animals simply cannot survive there, let alone form colonies.
True, rodents can indeed be found at stations – as in any large city. But, as a rule, they stay closer to places where food sources are possible, rather than in tunnels.

To maintain sanitary safety in the metro, planned deratization is regularly carried out. Work is performed by specialized organizations and is aimed at controlling the number of rodents and protecting the infrastructure of the underground.
The metro is a complex engineering facility where cleanliness and safety are under constant control. And "mutant rats" remain part of urban legends.
