The U.S. Department of Justice announced the lifting of the federal moratorium on capital punishment, which was introduced in 2021 during Joe Biden's presidency. In addition, the agency sanctioned death penalty motions for 44 defendants. This was reported on its website.

The decision resulted from an order issued by Donald Trump on the first day of his new presidential term. It involves the return of capital punishment by injection, the expansion of methods of execution to include firing squads, and the simplification of internal procedures to expedite the review of death penalty cases after appeals are exhausted.

"The previous administration failed in its duty to protect the American people by refusing to prosecute and apply the ultimate penalty against the most dangerous criminals, including terrorists, child murderers, and police killers. Under President Trump's leadership, the Department of Justice is once again enforcing the law and supporting victims," stated Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

In 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order to introduce the death penalty for defendants accused of murders committed in Washington. In the same year, for the first time in 15 years, a condemned prisoner in the US was executed by firing squad. This was 67-year-old Brad Sigman, sentenced for murdering his ex-girlfriend's parents with a baseball bat in 2001. The man himself chose execution by firing squad.

In the US, the death penalty is enforced at the state level: the balance is roughly 50-50. It has been effectively abolished in the states of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, California. Capital punishment is used in many Southern states, particularly Texas, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, both Carolinas, as well as Arizona, Montana, and others.
