The Lithuanian side stated that the incident posed a threat to civil aviation and forced temporary restrictions on the airspace over Vilnius Airport.
The Lithuanian MFA noted that they consider such cases a serious violation of international law and a hybrid attack, for which they hold the Belarusian side responsible.
Lithuania also called on Belarus to comply with international obligations to control the situation in its airspace and to take measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Earlier, it became known that Vilnius Airport ceased operations for an hour on the night of May 13. It was closed from 2:16 AM to 3:16 AM. Lithuanian authorities stated that objects resembling balloons were detected in an increased risk zone for aviation. As a result, two flights were affected: one was canceled, and the other was diverted to Copenhagen. The inconvenience affected 128 passengers.
Similar disruptions at Vilnius Airport had already occurred in early April due to the same weather balloons.
