Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has rejected the demand to resign from his post by the end of May, which was put forth by the country's new Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The politician said this in an interview with the Hungarian publication Index.

Earlier, Péter Magyar stated that Sulyok could not represent Hungary as president in any way and gave him a deadline of May 31 to leave office.
To this, the Hungarian president replied that there were no constitutional grounds that would force him to resign, so he would remain faithful to his oath and plans to continue working in office until "the performance of duties becomes impossible."
"The category of inadequacy and incapacity (which Magyar accused Sulyok of — ed.) is not part of the Hungarian Constitution. These are political views, and as much as I would like to comment on them, I do not have to deal with political views. The Constitution does not know such categories," says Sulyok.
The President of Hungary also stated that ex-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán asked him to become president and said that the Fidesz party supported his candidacy. After his election, Sulyok reportedly consulted with Orbán about once a month, but "received no advice."
Prime Minister Péter Magyar reacted sharply to the interview. He stated on social media that the president's statement indicates that "the Orbán era still holds its positions" and that Sulyok himself "has lost the trust of the majority of society."
Magyar accused the head of state of remaining politically linked to the former Fidesz party camp and not representing the entire nation. The head of government also announced further political pressure on the presidential palace.
According to Magyar, Sulyok's continued presence in office as president hinders the restoration of trust in the state after years of Viktor Orbán's rule.
Magyar first called on the president to resign immediately after winning the parliamentary elections, during a rally.
"I call on the President of the Republic to immediately ask the winner to form a government and then resign. I call on all puppets who have been in power for the last 16 years to do the same," Magyar said.
