Archaeologists found 11th-century birch bark dishes near Minsk
At Maloye Haradzishcha — on the Menka River — scientists from the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus continue excavations.

In a layer of fire, dated to the 11th century, rare household items for the region were found, writes 'Pristalichcha'.
Works at the Maloye Haradzishcha tract (Haradzishcha village) began last week.
Today, excavations here are being carried out with the participation of students from the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts. The expedition is led by Andrey Vaitsyakhovich, Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The latest find is a true rarity for our latitudes. Birch bark rarely survives in the cultural layer, but the fire that destroyed the structure preserved the organic material in the form of burnt remains.
"Girls and boys will have to examine this area literally centimeter by centimeter. Each layer of earth is like a page of a chronicle," commented Andrey Vaitsyakhovich on the progress of the work.

The current season at Maloye Haradzishcha will last two weeks. A special feature of this season is the involvement of students from a specialized university in the excavations. Young researchers learn field archaeology methods on site and help process the finds.
