Tsikhanouskaya supported the public initiative to install a white-red-white flag on the Grunwald Field
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya sent letters to the Marshal of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and the management of the Grunwald Battle Museum with a request to consider the possibility of installing a historical white-red-white flag on the Grunwald Field. In doing so, she supported the public initiative of Belarusians, under which nearly a thousand signatures of Belarusian politicians, cultural and public figures, historians, and activists have already been collected.
In her letter, Tsikhanouskaya noted that the Battle of Grunwald is a common heritage of Poles, Belarusians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and other peoples who together defended freedom.
For Belarusians, this is one of the key dates in national history, and the white-red-white flag symbolizes the historical continuity of Belarusian statehood and the modern struggle for freedom.
“Every year, hundreds of Belarusians come to the Grunwald Field to honor this victory. Unfortunately, in Belarus itself, the authorities deliberately suppress the memory of the Battle of Grunwald and replace it with Russian historical narratives. That is why it is so important to preserve this place as a symbol of our common European history,” Tsikhanouskaya noted.
The Office understands that it is practically impossible to implement such an initiative this year. However, we hope that local authorities and event organizers will be able to consider this proposal when preparing for future anniversaries of the Battle of Grunwald.
