Former Iranian President Arrested for Cooperation with "Mossad" — The New York Times

According to a report by The New York Times, citing high-ranking Iranian and American officials, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on suspicion of ties with the Israeli intelligence agency "Mossad".

The publication claims that in recent years, the Israeli side allegedly maintained contacts with Ahmadinejad and financed his trips and accommodation. According to the newspaper's sources, Israel considered him as one of the possible politicians who could play a role in the event of a change of power in Iran.

It is also reported that Mossad representatives met with Ahmadinejad several times outside Iran, including in Hungary and Guatemala. According to the publication, one such meeting took place in Budapest in 2024 during an international climate conference, and contacts continued into 2025.

The New York Times notes that Ahmadinejad's relationship with Iran's leadership has been strained in recent years. Although his influence was limited, he continued to participate in the work of one of the advisory bodies to the country's supreme leadership.

According to the newspaper's material, during airstrikes on Iran in February 2026, Israeli aviation struck Ahmadinejad's residence. After this, he was evacuated from the scene by car. The publication also claims that he later became disillusioned with the actions of the Israeli side.

In addition, it is reported that at the funeral of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, Ahmadinejad unexpectedly appeared among the participants of the mourning procession:

"Last Monday, he made a brief and unexpected appearance at the funeral procession of Ayatollah Khamenei. Video footage of the procession showed Ahmadinejad, dressed in a thick jacket in 32-degree Celsius heat, with a medical mask pulled down to his chin. The two other former presidents of Iran who are currently alive — Hassan Rouhani and Mohammad Khatami — were not invited and did not appear at any of the funeral ceremonies. Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad stood with his head bowed and without uttering a single word, surrounded by people who were clearly guards," the publication concluded.
