Soviet Flag That Traveled to the Moon Sold at Sotheby's Auction

A miniature Soviet flag, which traveled to the Moon in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission, was sold at a Sotheby's auction for 80 thousand dollars.

The red cloth, measuring 10 by 15 centimeters, was taken on the historic flight by American astronaut Buzz Aldrin. It was he, along with Neil Armstrong, who participated in the first human landing on the Moon in history.

During the bidding, the flag was sold for 80 thousand dollars. Including the auction fee, the final purchase amount was 102.4 thousand dollars.

In the upper right corner of the flag, an inscription in blue pen reads: "Flown to the Moon on Apollo 11", next to it is Buzz Aldrin's personal signature. The lot also included a letter of authenticity from the astronaut, in which he confirmed that the flag was indeed on board the command module "Columbia" during the first lunar expedition.

According to representatives of the Sotheby's auction house, Aldrin took the Soviet flag with him as a symbolic gesture of goodwill. He thus wanted to emphasize that the first human landing on the Moon was an achievement not only of the United States but of all humanity, regardless of political and ideological contradictions between states.
