The press service of the Kalinouski Regiment told a touching story of friendship between one of the Belarusian volunteers in Ukraine and a simple Ukrainian dog.
An artilleryman of the Kalinouski Regiment with the call sign Zoltan met his companion in September 2022 in the frontline Huliaipole. The fighters stopped to change a punctured wheel, and three local dogs ran out to them. Zoltan took the most active of them — a small white dog that had already survived "Grad" shelling — with him.
He was named Belyash based on his color. Everywhere his owner went — in Zaporizhzhia, Kupiansk, Kharkiv, Druzhkivka — the dog followed him, becoming a full-fledged part of the team.
Despite his frontline life, Belyash hated weapons. As soon as the fighters started cleaning their automatic rifles, the dog couldn't stand the metallic clatter and went into another room. Zoltan didn't take him to the positions themselves to protect him, but Belyash took control of the sky. Hearing the hum of an enemy drone, he would run into the yard and fiercely bark at the threat.
In Kupiansk, his independence fully manifested: Belyash gathered a real gang of local dogs, led it, and roamed the city. He was recognized even at distant rural checkpoints.
Otherwise, he was a simple dog who loved raw meat, car rides, and barking at squirrels.
"He lived a wonderful dog's life. I, at least, tried to make it so for him," Zoltan recalls.
Unfortunately, on July 21, 2026, Belyash passed away.
