Car spare parts have noticeably risen in price in Belarus — here's why

Plus 67% in four months

Automobile spare parts have sharply increased in price primarily because, as of July 19, they are no longer on the list of goods to which Resolution 713 — the one about price regulation — applies. Because of this, pricing has become completely free for suppliers, distributors, and retail traders alike.

A Threads user, who purchased spare parts at the end of April and then again at the end of August, shared screenshots showing that a basket of similar goods increased in price by 67% in four months. If in April it cost him 246 rubles, then just four months later — 412 rubles.

The ignition coil increased the most in price, exactly doubling in four months. The air filter rose in price from 9.20 to 16 rubles, and four spark plugs — from 28.40 to 51 rubles.

This is the result of prices for spare parts being freed, and now every link in the chain can increase prices as they wish. Prices for inexpensive items, which traditionally had the highest trade markup, have risen especially sharply. Therefore, a hypothetical clutch kit increased in price proportionally much less than some filters, spark plugs, and other small items, because the markup on expensive items was already lower before.

Business returns to old tracks

And while for ordinary motorists the exclusion of car spare parts from Resolution 713 is a disadvantage, business representatives say they sighed with relief.

This applies to both wholesalers and retailers.

Large retail sellers will especially benefit. The point is that, depending on purchase volumes, wholesale prices could differ quite noticeably for small, medium, and large sellers.

The introduction of Resolution 713 almost completely leveled this difference, putting a large retail seller with a chain of stores and a small individual entrepreneur almost on par. This made it more difficult for large businesses due to higher costs compared to small traders.

Now suppliers are returning to the old rules, where purchase volumes influence the wholesale price.

The second reason prices are rising is that during this period the Belarusian ruble has depreciated against the dollar and euro by 6-6.7%, and car spare parts prices are tied to the euro and dollar.

Also, in current conditions, logistics costs, which can both increase and decrease, significantly affect the price of spare parts for suppliers.

And the situation around the Strait of Hormuz is causing an additional global rise in motor oil prices, which also affects the price in Belarus.
